Yaroslav the Wise


Under the rule of Grand Prince Yaroslav (978-1054), Rus’ became a European power, with alliances forged mostly through marriage of his sons and daughters to rulers in Scandinavia, central and western Europe, and Byzantium. The building of St.Sophia Cathedral in Kiev was initiated, and some 400 churches were built in Kiev. Yaroslav founded a school and library attached to St.Sophia Cathedral, and sponsored the translation of Greek and other texts into Church Slavonic, the copying of many other books, and the compilation of a chronicle.
